Novel: The Scarlet Letter

‘The Scarlet Letter’ is a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne in 1950. Major characters are Hester Prynne, Arthur Dimmesdale, Chillingworth, and Pearl. Hester represents individual and free fate of will. She suffers a lot in puritan society because of her sin and crime. She has relationship with Arthur Dimmesdale without marriage and then she became pregnant. But puritan society and these people believes that she done crime but why this situation creates in her life? This nobody can see but behind this circumstances one reason. Her husband Chillingworth not came from eight years. May be she tired and bored with one type of situation. That’s why she thinks of further relationship of Dimmesdale. Pearl, her little daughter is a symbol of her love. Pearl is a child so she is very innocent but used by puritan magistrates as object. Even they can’t think about her.

In the scaffold scene, on the bosom of Hester symbol of “A” given by magistrate. Because they think she done crime and she must be punished. At this situation Dimmesdale also present and Hester very confidently faces people. ‘Scarlet letter’ is also symbol of this novel and color of these letters is red and red color is symbolizes blood, love, sacrifice. Here narrator is Pearl, she read the letters and then we came to know about the situation.

What I learnt from this novel?

According to my point of view, Hester is right to choose that path because every person has wished to live with one another. To all alone living a life is very difficult task because one can’t live without healthy relationship. Chillingworth is not living with her that’s why she went for Dimmesdale. Here Nathaniel Hawthorne presents the mindset of puritan people and how women treated in puritan society. But everyone has their own thoughts, feelings, emotions and hopes for life. So we can’t impose our idea to other person.
