Play: Waiting for Godot

‘Waiting for Godot’ is a play by Samuel Beckett in 1949. Title suggests that ‘Waiting’ is an endless process of life and ‘Godot’ is the idea of God. Here one question arises in the mind of reader that Godot will come at the end of the play or not. But it is an abstract idea for every human being whether we believe or not. When this idea end at that time new idea starts and this is existence of human. ‘Idea of God’ criticize by Nietzsche that “God is dead.” Hegel, Jean Paul Sartre, Nietzsche gave the idea of existence.

Here in this play, major characters are Vladimir, Estragon, Pozzo, Lucky, One little boy (messenger of Godot) and one invisible character Godot portrays by Beckett. Setting is country road, tree and Vladimir and Estragon doing such activity repeatedly. But these two characters are very opposite if each other that one is more thankful person and other is not more conscious. Vladimir is connected with mind and Estragon is connected with body. Symbol of hat and boot also used by Beckett that hat is the symbol of thinking process and boot is the symbol of such trivial aspect. Throughout the two acts they were doing same activity and waiting for Godot. They don’t know about that who id Godot? When he will come? And even they don’t know about looking of him though they waiting for something. When little boy come and says that today Godot will not come tomorrow he will come. At that time Vladimir more conscious about Godot and he asked so many questions to little boy. One time they think about death. So, here we can see the wish of committing suicide.

Here in the play meaninglessness, hopelessness, absurdity, idea of death, triviality, etc shown by Beckett. Many interpretations we can give here that, in this world really existence of God or not and if not so why we are always waiting that some day one person or deity come and solve every problems of our life. Though we waiting for somebody and nobody come but our ultimate reality of life ‘death’ comes and we have to accept it.

So, one major question is that why are we waiting? But this hope is good for human being that because of this idea we have to move on in our life. Self-confidence also increased in our life that some invisible person may be with me and then we lived our life with that hope.

What I learnt from this play?

But according to my point of view, it’s all about depends upon our mind that we believe in these things or not. I believe that our life is one type of dream that from the birth we wake up and then we sleep means we have to accept death. Then what happens we don’t know!!!!!!!!!!!
