Play: Mourning Becomes Electra
Mourning Becomes Electra is a play written by Eugene O’Neill in 1922. Title itself
suggests that ‘Mourning’ that death and Electra complex connected with this
also. Major characters are Ezra Mannon, Lavinia, Orin, Justine, Adam Brant,
Hazel etc. Gardener of Mannon house is also central character because when play
starts at that time only he is present to the outside. Here this play divided
into three parts,
1.
Homecoming
2.
The
hunted
3.
The
Haunted
After ten
years, Ezra Mannon come to home and this home is on one island. Justine is the
wife of Ezra Mannon and she has a relationship with Adam Brant. Lavinia is a
daughter of Ezra and Justine. But Justine has not good relation with her own
daughter because Justine believes that,
“You are born out of disgust.”
It means that when Lavinia was born at that time may be
Justine has not healthy relation with Ezra. Then Ezra became ill at that time
Justine gave him some medicine and then he died. But maybe it is poison given
by Justine to him. Then Lavinia and her brother Orin know that her mother has
relation with Adam Brant. And when Adam knows this matter at that time he
shoots himself. Justine also commits suicide. At the end all characters were
dead except Lavinia because she believes that history must be told by me.
Lavinia look is same like her mother Justine. Orin is more
attracted towards her mother and when Justine died at that time Orin started
relation with Lavinia. They both were gone to the trip also. But Lavinia is
more attracted towards her father Ezra. When the suitor of Lavinia, Peter
proposes her at that time she clearly told him that my father is more important
in my life. At that time Peter was very nervous and Lavinia told him that you
are like my brother. So for the Lavinia there is no clear relationship with
Peter.
What I learnt from this play?
My views
about this play are that here death of characters are central theme. Here very
harsh reality shown by Eugene O’Neill. Electra complex and Oedipus complex also
we can see here. But we can see here also politics of relationship. At the end of the life we have to accept death, this interpretation also we can give here.
