Novel: To the Lighthouse
‘To the Lighthouse’ is a novel written by Virginia Woolf in 1927. Idea of patriarchal society breaks down by Woolf. Major characters are Mr.
Ramsay, Mrs. Ramsay, Lily Briscoe, James, Charles Tansley, Prue, etc. Mrs.
Ramsay has eight children and she happily manages all the things. She always
cares for others like Indian woman. Sacrifice and kindness, we can see in the
character of her. Woolf portray the other character who always opposite of Mrs.
Ramsay and she is Lily Briscoe. Lily is a painter and she draws one picture of
Mrs.Ramsay. Through her painting we can see whole story and what happening the
next it also we can see here. She is a believer of free fate of will, freedom
and against patriarchal society.
When in the
novel Charles Tansley says that,
“Woman cannot write or paint.”
At that time
Lily is against this idea and believes that woman must have their own room and
money for living a life. It indicates that she is very opposite of Mrs. Ramsay.
One side character of Mrs. Ramsay’s character is good that she always follows
the rules given by her husband and cares for her family members, so she is a
bridge and link between Mr. Ramsay and her family. That’s why though she died
but always remembered by them. And the other side Lily shows her vision of life
through her painting but at the end vision of Lily failed and she puts a brush
aside and entering the room speaks that,
“Close the doors and open the windows.”
This
sentence proves her vision of life because she compares her life with Mrs.
Ramsay. At the end she thinks that Mrs. Ramsay’s life was better than me
because she lived life with her family members. And Lily is totally alone in
the world that no one cares for her. So, she suffocates with one type of
atmosphere and situation. Vision of Lily failed here in that patriarchal
society.
What I learnt from this novel?
Here I
conclude that, rules and regulations of society or family members are good but
if it is harmful for our freedom, education or any other activities so it
becomes curse for an individual person. But when the freedom is given by
society we have to respect for that and we can’t misuse this freedom.
