Poem: La Belle Dame Sans Mercy
La Belle
Dame Sans Mercy is originally written by John Keats but title borrowed from
Alain Chartier’s La Belle Dame Sans Mercy, 15th century poem. It is
a ballad and also follows the characteristics of it for example, simplicity of
language, absence of detail and supernatural power. Title itself suggest that
this lady is beautiful but without mercy. May be Keats has experience of pain
of love and pleasure.
Here in this
poem story of one knight and beautiful lady. First hi is very attractive
towards her outer beauty and sings a song of her praise. He praises her long
hair, cheeks compares with rose, her foot and it is light, her eyes is wild,
and then he made for her garland of roses.
But at the end he realizes that
this lady is beautiful but without mercy. She uses the supernatural power
through her magic and did this.
I studied “Archetypal Criticism” by Northrop Frye, in this criticism he
used many myths, social rituals, dreams and primordial images. Here one example
also we can see here and it is ‘Female
Fatal’. Fall of woman takes place and some violent and sexual desires of
women reveals here.
