Poem: The Waste Land
‘The Waste
Land’ poem is written by T.S .Eliot in 1922, and it is epic poem. This poem
divided into five parts. Every part suggest fragmented and broken image of
west. Here, T.S. Eliot showed the infertile and barren land of west and
mechanical life of that people. We can see here also reference of Upanishad and
Buddha. Let’s see five parts of the poem.
1.
The
Burial of the Dead
2.
A
game of Chess
3.
The
Fire Sermon
4.
Death
by Water
5.
What
the Thunder Said!
How sexual
perversion and spiritual degradation connected with each other?
According to
Bible sex is a sin. But it is enjoyable activity doing by man and then new
birth take place. Spirituality connected with rebirth and sex is the root of
regeneration. But here T.S. Eliot talks about sexual characters like, Madam
Sosotris, Typist, Clerk, One-eyed Merchant etc. Tiresias is a narrator of this
poem. Tiresias has both the experience of man and woman. Myth of Sisyphus, Myth
of Philomela, reference of Hamlet these all things are emerged in the poem.
What I
learnt from this poem?
I think it
is all about barren land and spiritual draught of the West people. And T.S.
Eliot connect this idea of modern to the spirituality and give message to the
all people that peace is more important in our life. In fifth part he suggests
Da-Datta, Da-Dayadhvam, and Da-Damyatta that means be a giver, sympathize and self
control. These all things are necessary in our life. So, ‘The Waste Land’ poem
is played a vital role to connect the idea of this 21st century and
that modern world.
