Novella: The Old Man and The Sea

The Old Man and the Sea is a novella written by Earnest Hemingway in 1952. Major characters are old man- Santiago, one little boy Manolin and the fish named Marline. Struggle of an old man and how he suffers in critical situation is shown by Hemingway. Eighty-four days he went for his journey and he catches a fish but at last he got nothing. Because at the end of the story only skeleton of Marline (fish) less. Here we can see that how he against the time and nature. Sea is presented here very symbolic way because our life is also very deep that one has to survive and have to face all the difficulties and circumstances. At the end of the story, old man lying on the bed and it prove the symbol of Christianity.

Here one question arises in our mind that why Hemingway puts the old man?

May be he proves that whether the person is old or young it is not important because struggle for every person is necessary or even compulsory. Old man is very enthusiastic person and happily faces all the situations in the sea voyage. Throughout the novella, his palm, shirt and his skin shows that he struggled a lot. But at last he got nothing.

What I learnt from this novella?

My views about this book are that if we take the birth in this world we have to face all the circumstances and critical situation. Santiago’s character leads towards real man of life. Desire, hope, dreams, goals, and destination these all things are necessary to living a life because it increases one type of self-confidence for life. But ultimate reality of our life is death and if we connect this idea to this novella that here also Santiago struggled a lot but ultimate he gets nothing. And then he has to accept death that it is harsh reality of every human being in the world.
